The last week of the month meansā¦ Career Therapy is in session! This monthly series is dedicated to answering your burning career questions- from coworker drama to culture battles to the everyday existential crises. Nothingās off-limits!
āØ āIām so happy for all the people in your program who end up with higher salaries! But what if you know what you want to pivot into will pay you significantly less than youāre currently making?ā -Stephanie
The oh-so-familiar plight of pay versus passion- nothing spoils the perfect job description like a disappointing salary range, right?
The way I see it, it's just fact that some jobs/industries pay less than others. There's no magic way to make, say,Ā social work or editorial pay as much as consulting or engineering. It is what it is. Yes, there are certainly ways to negotiate a better offer package, but if you just know that a certain role earns significantly less than another, that is a call you need to make for yourself.
Here are two ways I coach my clients through comp decisions:Ā
What are your desires, and what are your deal breakers? What total compensation figure is an absolute dealbreaker, and what can you do to get closer to that number in this role? Does everything you gain from this career (value alignment, work-life harmony, opportunities for growth, making an impact you care about, flexible hours) outweigh what you lose in pay?Ā
Consider diversifying your career. Does the lower-paying path need to be the only thing you do right now? Or can you add that kind of work into your life without subtracting higher-paying work? Example: A PWP alumna considered moving out of the legal field to pursue a path in freelance writing. After an honest look at her lifestyle dealbreakers, though, it felt better to her to join a more flexible boutique law firm and make more room to add in freelance writing projects. This way, she honored her passion for writing in a more sustainable, empowering way for her.

*Context for this next question: Yesterday, I shared an Instagram story from my lunch break at a bookstore, claiming that Iām āmanifesting my own book on one of these shelves soon!ā
āØ āDo you set a timeline for manifesting something? Iām really trying to put the good vibes out for a new job and apartment, but I feel like maybe itās me that needs to put in more effort. Thoughts?ā -Divya
What I love about manifestation- at least how I practice it- is the reminder that everything I need to create the life of my dreams is already within me. My unique blend of strengths, gifts, and desires is exactly what will bring my visions to life!
To that end: I trust that any action I take in line with my goals will be rewarded, and I learn to pinpoint what is and is not within my control.
Take looking for an apartment: Iāll have an ideal deadline in mind (mid-summer perhaps), and take the necessary action to meet that goal (hire a realtor, set Zillow alerts, get intel from friends in the neighborhood, scope out open houses). Iāll do everything thatās within my control.Ā
So, if I keep striking out on place after place, Iāll be at peace knowing that forces out of my control are keeping this from happening right now. And my deadline can switch from a concrete date to āas soon as possible!ā
I believe this: whatās for me will never miss me. And that brings me a lot of comfort when things donāt āappearā to be going my way.
ā Do you have a manifestation practice? Iād love to hear about itā respond to this email with your approach!Ā
