Mid-2020, I suggested 3 key questions you should have asked yourself if you were thinking about going to grad school in the pandemic. Today, 2 years into life as we know it, that list is adorably irrelevant!
So I updated it for the ~times.~
If the Great Resignation has you itching to leave your stale or toxic job for a masters, MBA, or other professional degree, ask yourself these 3 questions first:
"Can I get this education in a more time/cost/pleasure- effective way?"
The past 2 years have really taught us how crucial it is to enjoy what we do and how we do it. Is a traditional 2-4 year program your only option, or could an accelerated certificate course, General Assembly programs, or something like Morning Brew's MB/A get you where you want to go in a quicker, more fun, less expensive way?
"How well has the program adapted to virtual/hybrid learning?"
Virtual/hybrid learning is here to stay- but does your grad school accept that, or is it dragging its heels to catch up with the times? Imagine sitting in a 4 hour Zoom lecture when your professor STILL hasn't put in effort to learn how to teach virtually. Painful. Ask current students or look up any program-relevant hashtags on social media to see what students/faculty are sharing.
"How can this program radically transform my career-- if I want it to?"
If you're using grad school as a logical bridge between your current job and the career you really want- make sure that bridge is sturdy. What happens once you graduate? Are you on your own to figure out your career next steps? Or does your school have the right resources to connect you with the opportunities you really want? Do alumni have jobs/careers similar to what you want, too?
Are you thinking about grad school this year? What questions do you have about the transition? Comment them here and I’ll reply!
